Lloyd Library in Cincinnati, Ohio

I think that the Lloyd Library is one of Ohio's best kept secrets,. Known for it's large collections of books on phytomedicines, it was developed by the Lloyd Brothers (John Uri-Curtis Gates & Nelson Ashley) and began in 1864. They were pharmacists and had one of the leading pharmaceutical companies at that time.

I was lucky to have been able to attend a celebration at the Lloyd Library in honor of Jeanne Rose. She was considered the Grand Dame of Herbalism and Aromatherapy because her first book published in 1969, Herbs and Things, popularized the practical application of the use of herbs and aromatherapy for health and healing. At that time Jeanne donated

her extensive personal herbal library—comprised of approximately 1,000 ancient and modern texts on herbal medicine, science, and lore—to the Lloyd Library.

Today the Lloyd supports research in pharmacy, botany and horticulture. They have many rare books in the world of herbal medicine. According to Blumenthal in HerbalGram Number 34:4, the Lloyd Library is, " probably the largest library of pharmacognosy literature in the western hemisphere."
